Stitch And Glue Yawl






So has anyone ever devised a s&g interpretation of day & mower's seabird? as for my boating, i raced centerboarders and small offshore boats on w. lake erie & inland from junior sailing thru college, and briefly worked at 2 fiberglass centerboard-boat shops mid 1970's. my only involvement with wooden boats has been family ownership of highlander 235 in the 60's, my current wood el toro dinghy. Stitch and glue is a quick way to get a boat, but this project was a reminder that this type of construction can take longer than one thinks if you try to get a yachty finish: hiding the fiberglass tape and fillets takes some fairing. with lapstrake, there is a clean plank line to follow..

The stitch and glue process uses copper wires to tie the planks together. 1/16" holes are drilled along all the plank edges, about 4 inches apart. a 3" piece of wire is threaded through the holes and twisted. at first the twists are loose, but as all the planks get together the boat is drawn into final shape by progressively twisting the wires.. The yawl-rigged design is based loosely on the beach luggers of the uk and brittany. lod is 12'11:, beam 5'5". the boat features 375lbs of water ballast (bringing total weight to 650lbs) beneath the cockpit and extremely comfortable seating. stitch & glue kayaks. chesapeakes shearwaters wood ducks mill creeks petrel sg petrel play sg.
